Update on Borno attack: unspecified number of teenage girls abducted. Resident says soldiers are afraid to confront terrorists

At least four persons were killed and an unspecified number of teenage girls were on Sunday abducted by Boko Haram insurgents from Bam village in Biu Local Government Area, about seven kilometres from Buratai village, hometown of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai, in Borno State.

A resident of the area, Abubakar Ali, who fled to Miringa town for safety after the attack on Bam, told THISDAY on the phone yesterday evening that the insurgents invaded his village at about 3.30 am and set ablaze the whole village.

He said that they killed four persons and later left with some teenage girls but did not give a number on the numbers of abducted girls.
He said the insurgents raided the village till about 5 am and had sufficient time to “separate the teenage girls from married women, set the whole village ablaze and left with the girls unchallenged”.

He said it was unfortunate that “the hoodlums always attack our villages unchallenged. I am calling on General Buratai to do something about this, as the soldiers seem to be doing little to checkmate them here”.

“We have been telling the soldiers that the Boko Haram members are in some villages around here but they only go to Mangari, a few kilometres away from Buratai and shoot in the air and come back. It seems the soldiers are afraid to confront them,” he said.

Gross! South Korean Professor forces student to eat faeces and drink urine

A South Korean court on Thursday jailed a university professor for 12 years for forcing a student to eat human faeces and drink urine during a two-year period of physical and psychological assault.
The sentence was two years more than had been demanded by prosecutors, reflecting, the court said, “unimaginable atrocities” committed by the 52-year-old professor that had amounted “to a sort of psychological murder”.
The professor, identified only by his surname Jang, was arrested in July after his victim — a design student now aged 29 — attempted to commit suicide to escape his ordeal.
The abuse began after Jang hired him to work for a non-profit organisation.
The court heard how the professor — aided by other former students who were accused as co-defendants — had assaulted his former student with a baseball bat and other weapons.
He also had a plastic bag forced over his face and filled with pepper spray, after which he was fed human excrement.
The victim told police he had tolerated the abuse in the hope that Jang might help him find a full-time post as a college professor.
“The accused trampled upon his victim’s human dignity,” the court said.
The three students who had aided Jang were sentenced to between three and six years in prison.

Coincidentally, a Cross River State High Court sitting in Calabar and presided over by the Hon. The case was reported to Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, a leading and famous human rights organization in Calabar on the 11th  day of  February, 2013. The organization dutifully documented the case, supported the victim, pressed for criminal charges on the accused and meticulously watched the complainant’s brief throughout the prosecution of the case in court. NUDE PHOTOTS: 'Slut Walk' protest against sexual violence.

The streets of Rio de Janeiro were filled with unclad women who were determined to address claims by some that women provoke attacks by the way they dress or act. They also wanted to fight against proposed new abortion restrictions which, if passed, would mean a woman who was raped could only have a termination if she could prove the crime.

One of the protesters, Indara Costa, 18, said: "Men in Brazil think we are objects. We want to be able to do what we want with our bodies without being harassed." Stephanie Ruas, 26, said: "We may face violence anywhere. At school, as a young girl, at work - that's the culture. "Brazil is one of the worst places for a woman to travel alone. When I travel I bring a special door jam so that my hotel room cannot be opened."

The protesters said a woman is killed every two hours in Brazil which they claim makes it the fifth most dangerous country for females.

The wives of the late‎ Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, have been banned by tradition from re-marrying.
Quoting a palace chief, who preferred not to be named, The Nation reports that the order was prescribed by Ife tradition, since the Ooni is not considered dead but to have transited to a higher realm.
The chief, maintaining that the Ooni still lives, said it is forbidden for wives left behind by Oba Sijuwade to re-marry.
He said: “The rules is general and applies to all Ooni that has passed on and not peculiar to the wives of Oba Sijuwade, the immediate past Ooni. There may not be a clearly defined repercussion against the tradition but it is advisable that the order is obeyed at all times and for all generations. The best that can happen to the oloris left behind by any late Ooni is for them to remain single or be inherited by the reigning Ooni.”
The palace chief added that it does not matter whether the wives are young or old, “what matters is that the tradition must be sustained in the overall interest of the society.”
The late Oba Okunade Sijuwade left Oloris Morisola, Ladun, Odunayo, Adedolapo and Linda behind, with their ages ranging between 40’s and 60’s.
