African Union suspends Burkina Faso from organization

The African Union has suspended Burkina Faso over Thursday's military coup. The AU said sanctions would be imposed if members of the presidential guard, who staged the coup do not release members of the interim government which includes the interim president, Michel Kafondo.

The presidents of Benin and Senegal are in the city for talks with the coup leader. Meanwhile Pres. Buhari has condemned the coup in Burkina Faso. Below is a press statement from the presidency..

President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Government of Nigeria unreservedly condemn Wednesday's detention of the Interim President, the Prime Minister and other ministers of the transitional government of Burkina Faso in an apparent coup d'etat.
President Buhari and Nigeria align with ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations in rejecting the brazen contravention of the constitution and transitional charter of Burkina Faso by elements of the Presidential Guard under the leadership of General Gilbert Diendere.
President Buhari and Nigeria urge the Defense and Security Forces of Burkina Faso to keep faith with the agreed transitional programme for the return of the country to full democratic rule after elections, which were due to be held in the country on October 11, in support of which Nigeria has donated 20 pick-up vans to the National Electoral Commission of Burkina Faso.
While welcoming the news that the Interim President, Mr. Michel Kafando has now been freed, President Buhari and Nigeria also demand the immediate release of Prime Minister Isaac Zida and other detained ministers.
Nigeria will give the fullest possible support to ongoing efforts by the ECOWAS mediatory team of President Macky Sall of Senegal and President Boni Yayi of Benin Republic to quickly restore Burkina Faso to the path of order, democracy and constitutionalism.
The President urges the people of Burkina Faso to remain calm and steadfast in support of the transitional order, elections and democratic governance with the full assurance that Nigeria, ECOWAS and the international community will uphold their right to peace, freedom, democracy and good governance.

Okada rider violently rapes 14 year old girl in Lagos

An okada rider raped a 14 year old teenager who was returning home from visiting her aunt's shop.
According to a report by Punch, the teenager, currently an apprentice at her aunty’s cake shop was a virgin, until she lost it violently to the okada rider. (pictured rigft after he was caught and beaten)

The teenager who was visibly and emotionally in pain said she'd never forgive her rapist, identified as Sharafa Wasiu, for violating her, she also wished him death, “because of what he did to me. I feel sad anytime I remember that day.”

She said she had tried everything she could to remain a virgin until she was married but all that was for naught after being raped by Wasiu who after dropping her infront of her house, trailed her into the house and raped her in broad daylight.

She said, “That Saturday, I stopped a bike from the front of our shop to take me home. When we got home, he dropped me in front of the house, I paid him and I went in, not knowing he was still lurking around. I thought he had left, not knowing that he wheeled his motorcycle to the side of the house and stayed there, watching me. It was about 2pm.  “My aunty had told me to help her clean her shoes, so the moment I entered, I started packing the shoes outside so I could clean them. I used the kitchen entrance and I closed it when I packed the first round. “When I was in the room packing the remaining shoes, I heard the sound of the door and I asked who was there. I didn’t hear anything, so I went to check who or what was there. The next thing I saw was the okada man that dropped me a short while ago.
“Immediately, he pushed me to the floor with so much force, overpowered me, being a taller and more hefty person, he pulled my skirt and pants and raped me. I struggled with him but I didn’t succeed. Apart from the pain from the forceful entry and the terrible smell oozing out of his body, he was rubbing my body against the floor, inflicting serious injuries on my body. I kept shouting but nobody heard me because I was the only one at home.”
She explained that after she was raped the first time, she thought her nightmare was over not knowing she was in for more assault.
She said:
“When he finished, I pushed him away, pulled up my skirt and ran to the door to escape. I barely opened the door when he suddenly ran after me, pushed me and pinned me to the floor. I was gasping but he tore all my clothes, leaving me stark naked, and dragged me on the floor, trying to take me inside so he could rape me again. I can never forgive him for what he did to me. “By that time, blood was all over my body. I kept shouting but there was no one to rescue me.
As he was trying to remove his trousers, I managed to escape (naked) and I ran through one side of the house while he ran through the other side to get me. That was how one of our neighbours saw me and quickly called on others who mobilised to the place at once and caught him. They also seized his bike.”
Her aunty felt guilty for what happened to the teenager, she said
“Usually we don’t work on Saturday but that day, we went for an event. When we finished, I went somewhere and I sent her to go and give some food items to my attendants in the shop. I told her to go back home after that. And she did.
“We moved into that house about three months ago. It’s located around Onolu Road, Igbe in Ikorodu, while my shop is around Medical Road. When I heard about the incident, I rushed home and met them, but the boy, who claimed to be 23 years old, kept denying it. He was even making calls and threatening to call his guys who would deal with us. With the help of the security men on our street, we dragged him to the Igbogbo police station.
“It was at the police station that he confessed. He said it was the devil’s work and that he only made an attempt to do it but did not do anything. The shreds of Esther’s clothes are still with the police. He confessed that he parked his motorcycle beside the house and stayed inside the compound for about 10 minutes before he went inside. “They took our statement and gave us a letter to go to the General Hospital for test. She did series of tests, which confirmed that she was raped. I wish the incident didn’t happen because even the parents of this girl are not yet aware. I want them to come to Lagos before I tell them. It’s not the kind of news one could share on the phone.” Felicia pointed out that the girl had been on drugs since the incident happened and that she had been a recluse.
A police source confirmed that Wasiu had been charged to court exactly three days after and was being remanded in the Kirikiri prison on the order of the court. The source added that “the matter would come up for hearing sometime in October.”

Nigerian-born American college footballer jailed for rape

Samuel Ukwuachu

America’s college football is grouped into conferences. The Big 12 is one of the top conferences under the National Collegiate Athletics Association. The NCAA is divided into three conferences based on size of schools within the conferences.
In 1996, the NCAA formed the BIG 12 conference with its headquarters in Irvin, Texas. Big 12 consists of 10 school collegiate athletic conference. It is also a member of the prestigious NCAA Division One teams. Its football teams pride themselves for competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Big 12 collegiate members include, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, West Virginia and Boise State University.

In the early winter of 2011, Nigerian-born Samuel Ukwuachu, a resident of Brownsville, Texas, with his high school then, Pearland High School, signed with Boise State University as a member of 2011 recruiting class for the school. It meant a tentative acceptance to play for the university after high school. That year, Sam, as he was fondly called by teammates and fans, finished a spectacular high school senior year season with a 16-0 win. He stood at 6ft 11 inches and 211 pounds of athleticism.
In 2012, Sam was welcome to Boise State University Football team and programme as a prime time starter in this first division conference, Boise State Broncos. He started 12 games at defensive end. His talent and impressive field demeanor attracted college girls. The 19-year-old was enjoying the magnanimity of a great defensive end show stopper. He was being recognised and idolised by female fans. He began to befriend one of the girls and, soon, something in both of them stirred: a relationship.
It is unclear if his relationship with his then girlfriend affected his focus, dedication and performance, but shortly after, Sam began to run foul of the school’s football programmes disciplinary code of conduct. The coaching staff and coach were being inundated with alleged violence acts by their star Defensive End player against women, including his girlfriend. The girlfriend later alleged that she had been choked and beaten during Sam’s violent rage with her. By the spring of 2013, there had been a mountain of complaints of alleged violence and assault against women by Sam. The school understood the implications of these allegations against one of its players, a recruited All American star footballer with strong prospect for the National Football League. But the coaching staff could no longer continue to tolerate the erratic violent behaviour and allegations of assault against women by their star player, circulating the campus of the university. The then coach Chris Petersen dismissed him from the team in May 2013 for unspecified disciplinary reasons. He was transferred to Baylor University near Waco, Texas and sat out the 2013 season as required by NCAA rules. He did not also play in 2014. He was ruled ineligible that year.
Four months after he was transferred to the Baylor State Football programme, The Bears, Sam allegedly sexually assaulted one of the school’s female soccer players. That was in October of 2013. It was gathered that there were credible information and report of Sam’s violent and sexual assault on a female soccer player of the school’s soccer team.
In June 2014, the 21-year-old was indicted on two counts of felony sexual assault; then the school ruled him ineligible to play.
Early last month, one year after the indictment was issued, the trial of Samuel Ukwuachu commenced inside a Waco Texas court. One of his ex-girlfriends was called as a witness to testify on her relationship with the football star.
According to a Waco Tribune report, prosecutors called one of Ukwuachu’s former girlfriends at Boise State to the stand during the trial, and she testified that Ukwuachu punched her in the head several times, choked her, physically restrained her from leaving and had a violent temper.
The report said the incident occurred at Ukwuachu’s South Waco apartment after a Baylor homecoming party.
On August 21, a Texas jury, after deliberating for more than five hours found Samuel Ukwuachu guilty of sexually assaulting a former Baylor University soccer player in 2013.
The victim testified that Ukwuachu raped her at the football player’s apartment after a homecoming party in October 2013. She testified the two originally had plans to go to a restaurant, but he decided to drive home instead. The victim, who was 18 at the time, testified Ukwuachu held her down and raped her while she tried to resist and yelled “No!” throughout the assault. She also testified that Ukwuachu told her, “This isn’t rape,” and asked if she would call police.” He was sentenced to 10 years of felony probation and placed in the county jail for 180 days. He will also have to serve 400 hours of community service. Ukwuachu was facing up to 20 years in prison.
Reacting soon after his son was sentenced, Mr. Felix Ukwuachu said his son had been battling mental disorder. “Samuel was depressed, he was homesick. The illness was making him think suicidal thoughts, so I told him to come home. Samuel was in good standing with University of Boise State.” Meanwhile, his coach at Boise State did not disclose that Sam had been violent toward women, he did tell of a rocky relationship with his girlfriend which contributed to his depression.
The bright lights of his prospective first draft NFL pick for 2016 dimmed by rape and prison sentence. He would be listed as a sex offender after his release from jail.

Nigeria: Time for National Summit On Rape

Image result for Nigerian Rape Conference

Dantiye — Hardly a day passes without reading about rape in the papers, the fear is that we are becoming used to it, with the authorities not seeming to do enough to make the perpetrators face severe penalty.
This is probably why the culprits are going about it without fear of sanctions, which we should do everything to change, because rape is a crime that we cannot afford to tolerate. It is debasing and humiliating that one would not even wish it on one's greatest enemy.
Many articles have been written on rape, but as far as it persists or even increases, it is a duty on us to also keep harping on it.
However , the worst form of rape or sexual abuse is one being done by a family member especially a father. For the life of me, I cannot imagine a father 'touching' his own daughter, of all the women in the world, it is his own daughter that he wants to sleep with.
Such men do not deserve to be called fathers , because fathers are supposed to provide security and comfort to their own children, but when they turn out to be the abusers it is jail that should be their home.
But in many cases the family covers up to avoid stigma and even the police ask them to settle it among themselves if the matter is reported to them.
Nonetheless the victims end up suffering and must feel that the government has neglected them to do the needful to combat the crime.
Just recently a father in Lagos was abusing his seven-year- old daughter for some time, until he got caught and taken to the police. He was said to give her ten naira (N10.00) when he abused her.
Also one father caught sleeping with his young daughter said he slept with her only twice! Does the number make it less heinous?
Early this month, two married men were arrested in Abuja by tricking a 13-year -old girl to follow them to see her mother who was not at home one night. She thought something happened to her mother, only for them to take her to an uncompleted building and raped her.
Few days later there was a report of a 12-year-old rape victim that tested HIV positive. She had been repeatedly raped by her 25-year-old brother Abdullahi Muhammad and his friends for four years.
On the same day was a report of the arrest of one Alyatu Abdullahi for allegedly raping a 13-year-old sachet water seller along with his two friends by the Suleja Emirate Vigilante Organisation, Madalla branch.
In something akin to horror, in the same segment of the newspaper, a man nicknamed 'okada rapist' was arrested few days after the original report on the rape. The victim boarded the 'okada' and he diverted it to the bush and raped her.
This week a 30-year- old married man has been accused of raping small girls in Kaduna, where the girls said he used to give them N5.00 and N10.00 when they were sent on errand by their parents and lure them into a room as they live in the same compound.
It is true that some unscrupulous men lure hawkers somewhere to rape them, or lure small girls with delicacies and other tricks of kindness; however it is the rape at home by fathers, brothers, uncles and other close family members that poses great challenge. This is because if you eliminate the circumstance of raping hawkers and others by outsiders, how would you tackle the rapists at home?
This is a serious problem that calls for a special summit and changing our laws to sentence rapists to life imprisonment, so as for them to know that it can no longer be tolerated.
They cannot ruin other people's life and continue to enjoy their own life by getting lenient judgment.
At one time, there was an organization that called for the castration of rapists, however if a summit is held, every avenue should be explored to bring an end to this menace that is threatening to destabilise our society.
The place of religious leaders on this crime is very important, are they telling people what is right and what is wrong?
Whatever the case may be, they are critical stakeholders in this sin going on under their nose, even though some among them are also guilty of rape or sexual abuse under the guise of 'deliverance' or exorcising evil 'spirit'.
In any event, we need a society where women are safe and not a lawless one where young boys grow up with the mindset that it is OK to rape or sexually abuse a woman (girls)

Nigeria Might Offer Boko Haram Prisoners Amnesty for Chibok Girls

AFP Photo

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and other authorities are considering offering Boko Haram prisoners amnesty in exchange for the more than 200 Chibok girls the radical Islamic group kidnapped 16 months ago.

“The few (prisoners) we are holding, we are trying to see whether we can negotiate with them for the release of the Chibok girls,” he stated. “If the Boko Haram leadership eventually agrees to turn over the Chibok girls to us–the complete number–then we may decide to give them (the prisoners) amnesty.”
In April 2014, Boko Haram invaded Chibok and kidnapped hundreds of young Christian girls. The group received massive international criticism, including the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls on social media. First Lady Michelle Obama posted a picture of herself holding a sign with the hashtag. At least 57 girls escaped, but 219 are still missing.
In July, Boko Haram announced they are willing to swap over 200 of the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped in April 2014 for 16 terrorists who are being held by the government.
An anonymous human rights activist told the Associated Press that the group made the same offer last year when Goodluck Jonathan was president. That deal fell through due to last-minute problems. The activist claimed the swap was “stymied by the Department for State Service intelligence agency,” and “the agency said it was holding only four of the militants sought by Boko Haram.”
But earlier this month, Buhari told BBC Hausa that he believes Boko Haram forced the majority of the Chibok girls into marriages.
“They [Boko Haram insurgents] have scattered them, and [they] are being guarded at dispersed locations,” he said. “Most of the girls are Christians and were forced to embrace Islam. The sect’s cruel leaders have married some of the girls, obviously against their wish. Others have been left to practice their religion but their condition could hardly be ascertained.”
Since the incident, many who escaped or survived Boko Haram attacks claim they witnessed the Chibok girls with militants. The most recent accounts state the terrorists brainwashed the girls.
The terrorists indoctrinated the young girls, who now carry “out punishments on behalf of the militants.” Miriam, 17, escaped the group, but like Tabitha, was forced into marriage and is also expecting a child. Fighters slit men’s throats in front of Miriam and other girls to show them what would happen if any refused to marry the terrorists. A few Chibok girls resided at the camp. Miriam spoke with them, even though militants housed them in a different building. The BBC reports:
“They told us: ‘You women should learn from your husbands because they are giving their blood for the cause. We must also go to war for Allah.’”
She said the girls had been “brainwashed” and that she had witnessed some of them kill several men in her village.
“They were Christian men. They [the Boko Haram fighters] forced the Christians to lie down. Then the girls cut their throats.”
Anna, 60, fled from Boko Haram, but also lived with the Chibok girls:
She said she saw some of the Chibok schoolgirls just before she fled the forest.
“They had guns,” she said.
When pressed on how she could be sure that it was the Chibok schoolgirls that she’d seen, Anna said: “They [Boko Haram] didn’t hide them. They told us: ‘These are your teachers from Chibok.’”
“They shared the girls out as teachers to teach different groups of women and girls to recite the Koran,” Anna recalled.
“Young girls who couldn’t recite were being flogged by the Chibok girls.”
Like Miriam, Anna also said she had seen some of the Chibok schoolgirls commit murder.
“People were tied and laid down and the girls took it from there. … The Chibok girls slit their throats,” said Anna.

How UNICAL Law Professor Ndifon Brutally Raped Student, UNICAL Alumni Demand Justice (READ)

Prof. Cyril Ndifon
 Prof. Cyril Ndifon

More details continue to emerge in the rape scandal involving the University of Calabar Dean of the Law Faculty, Cyril Ndifon which made headline news last week.
Professor Ndifon has been placed on suspension in the university following a complaint by his victims mother to authorities. In the meantime, Ndifon’s fans have taken to social media to conduct a campaign attacking the character of his victim unlawfully circulating her name and photos online.
Former students of Ndifon have joined the campaign to bring the law professor to justice by petitioning the Commissioner of Police of Cross River State. In a letter dated September 14, 2015 and signed by thirty-one barristers and solicitors of the Supreme Court of Nigeria who graduated from UNICAL in the class of 97, the concerned alumni call for justice for the victim and say that the allegations against Ndifon is “all too familiar” and allege that their class, of 200 students, alone “teems with victims of his intimidation, sexual harassment, and sexual predation”.
The petition reveals the sad details of how the female student was allegedly subjected to brutal rape twice in the dean’s office and further humiliated by being made to carry his bag to his car. According to the lawyers, who are a mix of male and female, Ndifon marked his victim and set her up, creating a situation where he could be alone with her in his office on a Saturday where he had told her to sit and write her examination which he intentionally disrupted for the purpose of preying on the victim.
The petition recounts how Ndifon stopped his victim, midway into her examination, forcefully disrobed her and raped her. Not done, he locked her in his office only to return 30 minutes later. He ordered her to remove her clothes “by the count of three” and rape her all over again, even has she knelt down, crying, and pleading with him to spare her the pain.
The lawyers allege that the student was subjected to a two-hour rape ordeal at the hands of Professor Ndifon and he only stopped raping her when he saw that she was losing consciousness.
They also accuse the law Professor of being “an absolute monster” who shouldn’t have been employed by the university in the first place. “Prof. Cyril Osim Ndifon was a law undergraduate of the University of Calabar in the 1980’s. However, in his second or third year, the University rusticated him for cultism-related activities,” the petition reads. “It is our opinion that based on the character deficit which his rustication typifies; the University should not have employed him.”
“We are dismayed that the University of Calabar eventually offered him a position as an academic staff and thus gave him a platform which he used to pursue his mischief for about two decades now.
“It is our opinion that based on the character deficit which his rustication typifies; the University should not have employed him.
“There is thus no doubt in our minds that by its negligence or perhaps even outright refusal to carry out a thorough background check on Prof. Cyril Osim Ndifon, the University of Calabar unleashed an absolute monster on the hapless students of the University in general and students of the Faculty of Law in particular.”
The petition was copied to the Inspector General of Police, the Solicitor General, Ministry of Justice of Cross River State, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 6 Headquarters in Calabar, the Director-General, Department of State Security, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, the  National President, Nigerian Bar Association, the Chairman, Council of Legal Education, the Director-General, Nigerian Law School, Abuja, the Chairman, Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee, Abuja among others.

Couple killed by policemen for refusing to pay bribes

It has been reported that a couple returning from a church programme on Wednesday in a tricycle belonging to the family were shot by a team of policemen. The incident happened on Thursday at Ijegun Road in the Alimosho area of Lagos State, after the woman, Idongesit Ekpo, and her husband, Godwin, were shot by the policemen attached to the Isheri Osun Police Division.
Idongesit died on the spot, while Godwin was said to be gasping for breath at the Lagos State
University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where he was taken for treatment.

According to reports, Godwin met a police checkpoint at Obalagbe bus stop, where some other tricycle drivers were being reportedly extorted by an eight-man police team. Godwin ignored the police after he was flagged down and he sped past. One of the officers angrily broke his windscreen with a baton.

A police corporal, identified as Aremu Musesiu, was said to have opened fire on the tricycle. It was learnt that the bullet pierced through the tricycle back side and hit Idongesit, who was breast-feeding a three-month-old baby.

Her husband, Godwin, who looked back when the shot was fired, was said to have also been hit in the neck. The policemen hurriedly took money from the tricycle drivers they had earlier detained, before they vanished from the scene.

The incident attracted the attention of tricycle drivers in the community who trooped out on Thursday to protest the death and demanded justice for the victims. The protesters held placards, with inscriptions such as, ‘Isheri Police, your generation will suffer,’ ‘Stop killing us,’ among others.

The Financial Secretary of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Lagos State branch, Chinanzor Ifechiga, was brutalised and her telephone seized by the Divisional Police Officer. Ifechiga, who was accused of filming the protest and taking pictures, was manhandled by eight policemen, who struggled to take the phone from her on the order of the DPO.

A tricycle driver, Henry Chibuzor, said the couple was shot at around 10pm on Wednesday.
He said, “I was going home around 10pm when I saw the eight-man team asking me to stop at a checkpoint. I was there with four other tricycle drivers.
“The man was coming from church with his family. As he got to the junction, he swerved and his tricycle mistakenly brushed their patrol van.
“A policeman hit the tricycle’s windscreen with a baton and damaged it. The second policeman fired a bullet which hit the woman in the neck, came out from the other side, and hit her husband too.”
He said the policemen collected N5,000 from him and also extorted money from other tricycle drivers.

The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who confirmed the incident, said Aremu had been arrested and detained.
He added that the DPO of Isheri Osun had also been issued a query for disobeying the Inspector General of Police’s instruction.

He said, “The police are doing all in our capacity to ensure that the deceased’s children are taken care of. The police corporal involved has been taken into custody. When we complete all necessary disciplinary action, he will be charged to court for murder.
“The team leader and the DPO of Isheri Osun division have also been issued queries for disobeying the IG with regards to policemen performing duties out of uniform, and without a properly-labelled police van.”

Woman dies after undergoing genital mutilation (photos)

According to the Chronicle newspaper, a 33-year old woman, selina Mugande has died after under genital mutilation. Following the surgery, the deceased began to bleed excessively from the cut which made her seek medical help.

The procedure was reportedly performed at home, by the victim’s husband’s grandmother who used a razor blade as the surgical instrument. The victim’s husband’s grandmother has since been arrested by the police following the death of lady.

The Police spokesperson, Siphiwe Makonese, told the paper: “Following the recent incident which involved genital mutilation, we are concerned about the public’s continued use of traditional means which aren’t medically safe to treat their ailments.”

The Chronicle further disclosed that villagers in the district said female genital mutilation, usually carried out for non-medical reasons, is little talked about in Zimbabwe but reportedly goes on in some communities.

“We often circumcise women by cutting off parts of their external genitalia to deal with infertility and other problems but one controversial practice is the elongation of the labia,” the villagers noted.

Man batters his wife, stabs her with a pair of scissors and ejects her from his house in the dead of the night. (photos)

A woman was reportedly beaten by his drunken husband who also used a pair of scissors to stab her severally. The unnamed woman was sent out of the house in the dead of the night by her husband after he had wounded her in several parts of her body with the scissors.

The case was reported at the Igando Police Station; however the police failed to treat the matter with urgency. They did not give her any form of first aid treatment either, rather they demanded for money before attempting to take the wounded and bleeding woman to a hospital.

The story was publicized by Linda Ikeji, who was contacted by a family friend of the victim. According to the friend,
"We need the help of human right to intervene, the case has been reported at Igando police station but I must say am disappointed in them because they are just too sluggish to the situation.
Rather they are after the fee for placing report; meanwhile the woman is busy bleeding, they left her unattended even to this early hour of today the police station does not even have common first aid box to treat her rather they asked her to go to hospital."

It is indeed appalling that law enforcement officers would trivialize such an act and approach it with utter laxity. Such an act is punishable under various laws such as the Protection against Domestic Violence Law, 2007; the Domestic Violence Law of Lagos State and so many more. Sadly, the agents of law enforcement are the same people that make the law less effective.
