Photos: Abuja tricycle driver stabbed in the head

Muhammad Kabir, a 35 year old Keke Napep driver, was stabbed in the face by a man who pretended to be a passenger but was actually a robber who wanted to steal his tricycle.

Muhhammed who is presently lying critically ill at an Abuja hospital, told TheSun that he had picked up the man along the road and was taking him to Masaka, a suburb of Abuja when the robber struck

"As we approached the man’s destination, I asked for the transport fare of N300.00, which we had earlier agreed on. He dipped his hand into his pocket and what he brought out baffled me. Rather than give me the transport fare, he stabbed me with a dagger, thinking that I would fall off the motorcycle and he would take it away.”
Muhammed's brother, Mustapha who is at the hospital with him, said
“Alas, my brother did not fall off the bike, but instead he rode on with the long dagger stuck in his head.”
Passersby were quick to help him after they found blood gushing through his face.
“He was later taken to Pan Raf Hospital, Nyanya, where doctors led by one Dr. Odia and other members of staff battled to save his life, through emergency care. When he appeared to have stabilized, the doctors referred him to another hospital for proper management and care.
“An X-ray of the skull showed the dagger had gone in from the right side of the face just in front of the ear and was nearly poking out from the cheek on the other side,” a source at the hospital said.

Sunday Tsado who died allegedly 'cause 'he was a nobody' at National Hospital Abuja (Photo)

Sunday Tsado, fondly called Sunny, was a young man who through his hard work, was a breadwinner for his family. Sunny was a peaceful gentle man from a humble background who found happiness and fulfillment in his job, Photography.
Sunny was unfortunately attacked and shot by armed robbers in his home, Lugbe in Abuja in the early hours of 2nd May, 2016. He was immediately taken to the National Hospital, Abuja. He arrived at the hospital, bleeding and in severe pain at about 2.30am. He was denied the required urgent medical care including blood transfusion to save his life. Even without initial assessment, his family and friends were told to provide blood for transfusion because there was none available.
However, while the struggle to ensure he gets the emergency medical attention was ongoing, Sunny’s other friends and well-wishers were trying to reach his elder brother who works as a security man at the same National Hospital. They were able to contact his brother at about 5.30am, when he immediately found his way to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital. The brother upon arrival, angrily cried out to the health workers asking if they knew the patient was his brother. That was ONLY when two pints of blood were immediately released to be transfused to poor Sunny. Other forms of treatment were also started at the same time.
Unfortunately, the golden opportunity Sunny had to be saved, was over. Sunny died at about 8.00am.
Why is this case painful and disturbing? Sunny, the breadwinner of his family was left unattended to at the accident and emergencies, until his people were able to reach his brother who works as a gateman at the same hospital.
Sunny only received treatment from 5.30am, only because of the brother; 150 minutes later. Is this the first of such cases? Unfortunately No, this is one of the commonest, unacceptable and unethical practices experienced by most Nigerians. Sunny would probably be alive if he were brought in an SUV or some exotic car.
We have imagined that Sunny would probably be alive if he had influential people take him to the hospital. Perhaps he would have received the required medical care at the golden hour, if the health care providers had earlier cue he was a relation to one of their staff. But should medical attention be discharged on such standard?
If Sunny didn't have a brother working at the hospital, he would probably NOT receive the attention he got about 150 minutes later. It’s more painful that the same blood that wasn’t available earlier, became available because he changed status from being an “ordinary” patient to a staff’s relative.
There is no doubt that the failure of the health system in this situation is a bad reflection of the country. It is more heart breaking that such occurrences are associated with the National Hospital, Abuja. It's more disheartening to know that Sunny, and more people have had their lives ended due to such preferential treatment and negligence, if not more.
Just as Sunday Tsado has been laid to rest, 6 feet beneath the earth, today 6th May, 2016, we hope the National Hospital would accept responsibility for Sunny's death. We want justice! We hope to get such wrongs corrected to reduce future occurrences!

Lagos State police launches manhunt Lekan Shonde who allegedly killed his wife

The Lagos State Police Command has launched a manhunt for Mr. Lekan Shonde, who allegedly killed his banker-wife, Ronke, in Lagos on Thursday night.

Ronke Shonde, a mother of two, was found dead in their apartment located on Tiemo Close, Off Awori Street, in the Egbeda-Idimu area of Lagos State on Friday morning.

The husband was said to have fled with his wife’s mobile phones after the incident occurred.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos Command, Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident on Saturday, adding that the matter had been transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba.

She said “marks of violence” were found on Ronke, suggesting that she was murdered in cold blood.

The police spokesperson further said the command had launched a manhunt for the husband of the deceased.

Badmos said, “Yes, I confirm the incident. It was reported on Friday at about 8am by the landlady. She said at about 7am, she heard the screaming of Mrs. Ronke Shonde’s children, who is one of her tenants, as they couldn’t find the key to open their door from inside.

“When the door was forced open from outside, the lifeless body of the victim was found on the floor.

“Police operatives visited the scene and the corpse was removed and deposited at the Isolo General Hospital mortuary for autopsy.”

The police spokesperson explained that the deceased’s husband was at large and could not be reached on his telephone lines, which had been switched off.

“Effort is on to get him. The command will certainly get to the root of the case. The case has been transferred to the homicide section of the SDCI for discreet investigation,” she added.

Some residents of the street on which the couple lived, who spoke to SUNDAY PUNCH when one of our correspondents visited the area on Saturday, lamented that the deceased had been enduring an abusive marriage.

It was gathered that Ronke was the second of three siblings to die within two years.

A neighbour, who has a shop on the street, said Ronke died on Thursday night but the neighbours did not know until Friday morning.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the neighbour said, “It is a very unfortunate incident. The man had serially abused and assaulted his wife until the Thursday attack led to her death.

“He would tie her, beat her and take her mobile phones away. She should have left him long ago.”

The neighbour said the couple lived comfortably, as the wife worked with Guaranty Trust Bank while her husband works at the Apapa depot of Mobil.

The neighbour also said,
“The husband is much older than the wife; the woman was in her 30s while man should be in his 50s.”

The neighbour further said, “Some people heard when she screamed on Thursday night but nobody knew what happened to her until her nanny raised the alarm on Friday morning.

“I was one of those who packed her remains. She had injuries on her head, neck and around her private parts. There were blood stains on the walls, which indicated that she must have struggled with him until he overpowered her.

“She was a light-skinned person but by the time we broke into their apartment, her body was already becoming dark and swollen. A doctor who conducted some tests on her said she must have been killed around 11pm on Thursday.”

According to the neighbour, Ronke’s mother had three children, while her younger brother died about a year ago. He lamented that her death might have been prevented if her brother’s wife, who had been living with them, was home on Thursday night.

When one of our correspondents sought to speak with the couple’s immediate neighbours on Saturday, their residence, which had two buildings one of which was said to be occupied by the landlady, was shut.

Another resident in the area, who also declined to be named in print, said the police had sealed up the couple’s flat, while other occupants of the building had shut the gate to visitors ever since.

“The flat was not just sealed. The police called a welder to weld the doors, which are made of iron to protect the crime scene,” the souce said.

The neighbour added that Ronke’s uncle came to take the children to their grandmother who is based in Kwara State.
