The Boko
Haram terrorist group has offered to free more than 200 Chibok girls kidnapped
from school on April 15, 2014 in exchange for the release of its militant
leaders held by the government. According to Fred Eno, a human rights activist
who is also a negotiator for Boko Haram, the current offer from the terrorist
group is limited to the girls alone as there was no mention of discontinuing
further bombings.
Eno stated
that an opportunity which was ignored by the former President, Goodluck Jonathan,
is being explored under the present administration. Explaining further, he said
that through Islamic scholars and Muslim leaders, the Government has taken a
dangerous and courageous step to engage the insurgents.
Eno revealed
that the process was initiated last year with him and Government representative
traveled to a northeastern town where the prisoners exchange was to take place,
only to be obstructed by the Department for State Service (DSS) intelligence agency.
Hopes are
high as both the Government and religious leaders remain positive that
President Muhammadu Buhari’s offer of a ‘clean slate’ to the terrorist group
and the use of negotiation will yield positive results.
