Collective fight against Early Marriage, Child Abuse


The West African Civil Society Forum (WACSOF)-Nigeria Platform, supported by Ford Foundation held a one-day policy dialogue on early marriage in Nigeria. The dialogue which held in Abuja was themed, "Curbing Early Marriage & Protecting Children's Rights in Nigeria". The policy dialogue which engaged relevant national level stake holders was aimed at generating recommendations that are relevant to specific policies as regards early marriage. In attendance at the dialogue were policy makers, legislators, top government officials, legal experts, law enforcement officers and stakeholders in the development community from various sectors including ECOWAS, Ministries Departments and Agencies, the Academia, Civil Society Organizations, Media and Non-State Actors. The dialogue focused on matters such as the Right to free and fair consent to a marriage as recognized in the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights, and the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) which prohibits child marriage; the Child Right Act of 2003, and the impact of child marriage on these laws and instruments in Nigeria.
