Amawbia, a town in Awka South Local Government Area
of Anambra State, has set up a skill acquisition centre for girls to curb
crime.
The centre was handed over to the women wing of the
community’s leadership known as Eziokwubundu on Saturday for management.
Speaking during a ceremony to mark the handover of
the facility, the Deputy President-General of the community, Mr. Chris Nwoye,
who stood in for the President-General, Mr. Anene Maduka, said the purpose for
establishing the centre was to check crime and increasing juvenile delinquency
among young females in the area.
He said beneficiaries of the scheme would become
entrepreneurs and be in the position to set up different ventures for
self-reliance and “say good bye to that demon called poverty”.
He urged the managers of the centre to optimize the
objectives for setting up the project while calling for the support of the
state government.
In her address, the President of the women wing of
Amawbia community, Mrs Chinwe Nwanna, said the centre would run
practice-oriented programmes.
She said, “Roasting of corn along the expressway is
not a skill. Every woman needs a good mindset and this is achieved when we see
our daughters and sons engage in something meaningful to help them become
independent, self-reliant and above all, achieve a wholesome lifestyle.”
Nwanna said the centre would run programmes in food
and nutrition, hairdressing and cosmetology and computer education.
Other areas of concentration, according to Nwanna,
will be clothing and textile, art and craft, home management and agriculture.
She appealed for assistance from within and outside
the community, saying, “When you train a man, you have trained an individual,
but when you train a woman, you have trained a nation.”
